Information for Hospitals

Our team of newborn hearing screeners consider it a privilege to screen babies in hospitals, at follow-up appointments, and in our clinics. Our screeners take great pride in gently screening newborns, providing the results, and helping caregivers understand next steps as necessary. Hearts for Hearing is a recognized hearing care center of excellence in Oklahoma. Our pediatric audiology, speech-therapy, and listening and spoken language services are a model for hearing providers around the country.

Hearts for Hearing provides highly trained staff to perform the screen at bedside, educate parents about the newborn hearing screen, schedule follow-up testing, and to stay in contact with no-show appointments. The foundation and patient care team work to remove obstacles to ensure babies with identified hearing loss connect with the follow-up care needed.

Hearts for Hearing’s newborn hearing screen program benefits hospitals by:

  • Removing the task providing this screening from nurses and hospital staff.
  • Providing guidance/next steps at the bedside, including helping caregivers facilitate follow-up appointments if needed.
  • Helping detect hearing loss to support the importance of timely identification and early intervention of hearing loss.
  • Improving the quality of life potential for 100 – 150 Oklahoma babies born with deafness each year.
  • Providing an annual report to hospital administration with the data collected during newborn hearing screens.
  • Providing a cost effective program.
  • Eliminating hospital capital expenditures, maintenance costs for screening equipment and disposables.

Hearts for Hearing’s Newborn Hearing Screen services screen approximately 2200 babies per month at numerous hospitals with a Loss To Follow up (LTFU) result of ZERO. Unfortunately, the State of Oklahoma ‘s LTFU for 2022 – the most recent year reported to the CDC – is 88%. Which means of the babies that fail the newborn screen, 88% of them are reported as not having received follow-up testing. Due to Hearts for Hearing dedication and commitment to follow-up efforts, we are so proud of that ZERO% LTFU in our own programs. Also, thanks to our program, over 100 babies have been successfully identified with hearing loss and have begun receiving the early intervention services they need.
