The Hearts for Hearing Foundation provides the first set of hearing aids to all newly diagnosed infants and children in Oklahoma (up to age 18) at no cost to the family. In addition to hearing aids, we provide all audiology services at no cost to the family for children with hearing loss under the age of 3 to families in Oklahoma.
Every gift helps children like Kevin not only hear, but to thrive socially, academically, and emotionally. Together, we are giving children the gift of sound and the confidence to use their voices in the world.
In 2021, at only three weeks old, Kevin was diagnosed as profoundly deaf following an Auditory Brainstem Response, or ABR, test at Hearts for Hearing. “We had no idea what to do,” his mother recalls, but they were determined to give Kevin every opportunity to thrive.
Kevin was originally fit with hearing aids to provide access to sound and stimulate his auditory nerve, however, due to the extent of his hearing loss, hearing aids were ineffective in providing the level of sound needed for Kevin to succeed with listening and spoken language. Due to this, his parents made the decision to pursue cochlear implants for their son. “We just wanted to make sure he had the best chance of being comfortable in the world,” they explain. “We didn’t want to look back and feel guilt that we didn’t give him every opportunity that was offered.”
From their very first appointment, at Hearts for Hearing his parents recall being treated with gentleness, and unwavering support. His speech therapist became more than a clinician; she became a lifeline. “I struggled a lot with Kevin because I had no idea what I was doing,” his mother shares. “She guided and supported me through it all, even when I felt I wasn’t doing enough for him. Many tears have been shed, but Hearts for Hearing was always there for support.”
Today, Kevin is thriving with listening and spoken language, and is, as mom describes, “the most social child you could ever meet.” He loves fishing with his dad, going on car rides, swimming, and building sandcastles. He enjoys listening to songs and delights in funny noises. Most of all, he loves his little sister Tessa, born in 2024, and is always wanting to squeeze her. “Together Kevin and Tessa have given us the biggest joy in life,” their parents say.
Thanks to support from friends like you, Kevin’s family knows a future is in reach where he is on track with his peers and advocates for himself with confidence.
